What about Fenders 'vintage' vs 'present day' wiring for Teles??
If one changes the switch wiring to the modern version EXCEPT keeps the 250K volume POT and does NOT use the .001 cap, what tone can be expected compared to the original wiring and to the full-up modern wiring? (1) you're describing the same tone you have now*, and just changing the pickup/switch combinations.. (2) aside from the different pickup switching, the circuit marked as 'vintage' will have a slightly darker tone at full volume (from the lower value 250K pot), and will lose more highs as the volume is turned down (no bypass cap) (3) the circuit marked 'present day' is slightly brighter at full volume, (1 Meg.)and gets quite a bit brighter as it's turned down, (with bypass cap) the in-between possibilities are: (4) adding the .001 cap to the 250K pot, which will have no effect at full volume, but will produce the 'bright' effect as the volume is turned down.-this same set-up is very common on many guitars. (5) the not-so common alternative would be to use the 1 meg pot without the cap. this will be slighty brighter than the 250K at full volume, and slighty DARKER than the 250K as you turn it down. (6) THEN there's the tone control- *slap the .1 cap in place of the .05, if you must retain the deeper tone of the 'vintage' circuit (in the first switch position) when you turn the tone control all the way down.- (this will also make the other switch positions slightly darker.) (7) the combination i've used to wire teles since the 70's is: 250k pots, With the .001 cap PLUS a 150K resistor connected across the. .001 cap---basically the same as the 'vintage' circuit, but retains more bass as you turn down the volume-not quite so much of a 'bright' shift... |
